really , really wanna get there and you will find a way of your own.  asking questions won't make it so, get on the road.

Cheapest: walk or hitch hike (may be illegal in NY state)

Next cheapest, bus.

Airplane is expensive.

i was in a similar situation, i found the best way was to catch a greyhound bus, it takes all night and stops a lot of times but you get there, and leaves and arrives in the center of both cities, so no airport transfers $85 one way, $170 return, i stayed at the YMCA in NYC it was pretty cheap and right in the city and safe and secure
another option is to hire a car it might work out cheaper if there is two of you.

I am going to Toronto in August and by the end of August we are going to NewYork. My bro research the cheapest travel but there was no luck. The travel is expensive, if i spend hundreds of dollars of that, I can't spend so much in NewYork. (Sadly)
Any suggestions by train, bus, or airplane? By anything?
